For my final year project in University, we were asked to choose a subject of our liking to focus our final year project on and for this, I chose Printmaking as my topic. I started off by doing research on the whole topic, which lead me to discovering other ways prints are used. I found out that in Ghana, the people used their prints as a way to express their emotions, class and belief which they term as Adinkra (meaning Fare-well) They will do so by screen-printing or Block printing several symbols known as Adinkra onto fabric. These symbols as well as the colour of the fabrics they are printed on usually mean stand for something and this was what I was trying to depict in my designs. I had bought three fabrics (Red, Black and White) Black representing family close to a dead person, Red for those who are not and white for the priest conducting the funeral. I then chose a few Adinkra Symbols and screen-printed them on to the fabric. Alongside the printed fabrics, I also created a book that explains the history of Printmaking and as well as information on Adinkra printing.
